Today, many medical practitioners are using chiropractic care as part of
their patients' treatment plans. However, the art of this treatment dates
back to 500 B.C., when the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, studied spinal
manipulation and wrote several works on it. Through this discovery,
patients have enjoyed returning to their active lives with little or no pain.
Is chiropractic care right for you? For those who suffer from
neuromusculoskeletal conditions including sprains/strains, tendonitis,
arthritis and pinched nerves, chiropractic care can be very effective.
Whether you have just sustained a work- or sports-related injury or are
dealing with a degenerative disorder, we can help you. Our chiropractor
and specialists do a thorough assessment of your condition to determine
if this treatment is right for you.
Comprehensive treatment. Once we determine the source and severity
of your problem, we develop a treatment plan, which includes:
Spine manipulation
Soft tissue techniques
Modalities such as physical therapy or electrotherapy
Exercises
Diet recommendations
The length of your treatment depends on your condition. Generally, a
patient with acute lower back pain has a good clinical outcome after 4
to 6 weeks of treatment. (Saal & Saal)
How chiropractic care works. A large part of this treatment involves
spinal manipulation. By applying skilled therapeutic maneuvers to your
spine, we can increase the active and passive range of motion, break
adhesions between joints and stimulate joint mechanoreceptors (nerve
endings that are sensitive to motion).
In a healthy spine, mechanoreceptors are continually stimulated, allowing
your body to function normally and pain free. However, once your discs
and joints develop adhesions or become irritated, the mechanoreceptors
are not stimulated, causing pain. This is why spinal manipulation can be
so effective in minimizing your pain and increasing your mobility.
Spinal manipulation also stops the pain impulses from going to the central
nervous system, which can decrease or eliminate your pain.
How effective is this treatment? While we have seen tremendous
results in our patients, we feel it is important to note the medical research
on chiropractic care and its findings. Thirty-eight clinical trials have tested
Spinal Manipulative Theory for lower pack pain. According to the Journal
of the American Medical Association and the British Medical Journal, the
latest studies show manipulation is effective for chronic lower back pain.
